The Bible
These essays are devoted to the study and understanding of the Bible itself
as distinct from the particular messages within it. It covers the reasons we can
trust our Bibles, how to read and study our Bibles and aims to give some
understanding of how the Bible is structured and why.
Bible Text
- Early Bible Translations
This essay is in a slightly new direction. It discusses the early versions and
translations of the Holy Bible including ones in Greek, Latin and Syriac.
- Bible Version Selection
My entry into the great Bible Version debate. Note I attempt to provide some
criteria to aid the reader in making their own decision rather than championing
a particular translation itself.
- The Greek Text This
extensive essay tackles the subject of attempting to find the true Greek
text from the many extant manuscripts. This paper is quite mathematical and
frankly quite controversial.
- Four Gospels? This essay takes a
somewhat unusual angle upon the synoptic problem. It argues that the four
gospels are each designed for different purposes; not different audiences or
perspectives.
- Gospel Construction asks
whether or not the relatively prevalent view that the Gospels are a collection
of 'mixed and matched' short stories is mathematically or Biblically valid.
Biblical Interpretation
- Bible Study (Hermeneutic) Tools An
overview of the common tools for word level Bible study in English, Greek and
Hebrew.
- Strong's Encoding the NKJV A detailed
look at the Strong's encoding system and benefits of using it. Also a proposal
and results of preliminary analysis upon the work involved in Strong's encoding
the NKJV.
- Analysis Comparison A comparison of
the analysis method proposed by 'How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth' to
Albert Barnes and Matthew Henry. Has a few minor insights into 1 Corinthians
too.
- Implicit Text A look at the
practice of reading between the lines of scripture to find facts that are
implicitly but not explicitly stated.
- Inspiration of Scripture A discussion
of the meaning of the inspiration of scripture and a suggestion as to the effect
this should have upon our interpretation of it.
- The Self Revealing God The how, why and
what of God's progressive self revelation.
- 21st Century Law This paper
asks the question: "To what extent is the Pentateuch (the law) a valid piece of
scripture to be studying today" and then: "If so, how should we study it?"
